Solid SW swell hits secrets early one dreamy morning. We woke up to a good number of these mornings through September!
September Sessions We have had a great season here, with Bali seeing several big swell events combined with steady offshore trade winds. All of August and September have been beautifully consistent with non-stop waves, the Indian Ocean gave us two months of clean, well-groomed lines wrapping into Uluwatu and across the Bukit peninsula – bringing our favorite waves to lively perfection! The relentless offshore trades and swell did create a strong up-welling of cooler water temps, most of the crew found it was time to break out a bit of neoprene to stay out longer. As of now, it’s still nice to be wearing a wetsuit top or spring suit but we are expecting the water to warm up again soon as we are seeing the humidity rising. So, it’s still a good idea to bring a 1mm or 2mm top to surf in here at Uluwatu. As we head into shoulder season, October is already shaping up to be mostly over-head and offshore – come on over if you can! Brandon and Christian Wahlers
The Wahlers: Big waves and Big Tuna One of our favorite couples passed through last month and were excited to be gifted with solid surf throughout their ten day stay, as well as a primo diving and snorkeling day and plenty of yoga in the Morning Light Yoga studio for Christian. Brandon Wahlers, expert spear fisherman, loves Bali and has spent a lot of time in Lembongan and Penida, he says he would spend months there each rainy season for years-on-end back when he was honing his skills and chasing big dog tooth tuna. So, it should not have come as such a big surprise when he returned to the surface with a 30 + kilo doggy after borrowing a big blue water elite Riffe gun off the racks over at Drifter Surf shop. The man designs guns for Riffe and is an ambassador for the world famous speargun brand, and really showed us a thing or two when it came time to rig-up and take some big drops in strong currents. We hadn’t even brought a cooler or fish bag big enough for the one fish he took a shot at! Luckily, it was right at the end of a long day of snorkeling with his wife Christina before he decided to break out the big gun and we were able to just stack some ice on the prize fish and head straight home. The big swell that followed was greeted by Brandon with the same enthusiasm, he found the time to paddle out the Uluwatu cave on a borrowed 8ft board to stroke into one of the big blue bombs of the day out front of our umbrellas at the bombie! We look forward to having the Wahlers back again soon – more sashimi please! Brandon finding a big blue wall at the bombie. Quick 30m plus drop down to the sashimi market!

Asli Ashley: A tribute After a recent Sunday sunset at Mana we screened the premier of a special film made in tribute to one of the great characters of Bali: the artist Ashley Bickerton. The film was created by his son Django and family friend Max Desantis; two boys who have grown up together here in Uluwatu to both become artists in their own right. Max only had this to say about the film: “We made the film just me and Django, and it was all for the love.” The film is beautiful. Look for the link below to see it on YouTube. ![]() The film is a both a tribute and a journey. ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above to watch the Asli Ashley video by Max Desanitis and Jango Bickerton!
