We had the pleasure of hosting world-class waterman Kai Lenny for several wave-rich weeks in June. Kai arrived with two massive coffin board bags filled with every conceivable type of cutting edge surfing craft – from a SUP to a wing surfing kite to a hydrofoil board – all of which he put to good use along the fabled Uluwatu reef.
Kai and his titanic board bags were joined by his brother Ridge and one of our all-time favorite hi-fi performers, fellow Maui surfer Dusty Payne. Kai and the Maui crew enjoyed several weeks living the good life at two of our new luxury villas, Ocean View 3 and Ocean View 4. Kai and his partner, Molly, were also joined by our resident pooch Rocky, who was their welcome villa guest while they were away from their own Fenchie bulldogs back in Maui.

We look forward to welcoming Kai and crew back again soon, hopefully for a historic big swell in Uluwatu – and more tummy rubs for Rocky.

On Wednesday, June 16th, the Bali surfing community gathered at Balangan Beach for a memorial paddle-out to remember the amazing life, adventures and spirit of our beloved friend Thomas Arthur Schultz.
If you ever had the chance to meet Tommy, you know what a special person he was. An amazing photographer and even better human, Tommy was always there to document so many historic events and special moments here at Uluwatu Surf Villas, always with a smile and a good yarn to share.

Tommy, you will be dearly missed. But the memories of our travels, adventures and good times together will live on in the many lives you touched here in Uluwatu and beyond. Rest in peace, Tommy. We love you.
South African artist Ricky Lee Gordon recently spent ten days in residency at Uluwatu Surf Villas. During his stay, Gordon produced a new series of waterscape paintings inspired by the ocean out front.
Guided on his maiden Uluwatu voyage by good friend and fellow artist Kristjen Sterjne – who calls the newly developed Residences at USV home – it was the perfect introduction to the historic and revered wave at Uluwatu, says Gordon, “A mystical experience to say the least.”
During his residency, Gordon took a boat out from nearby Thomas Beach at sunset to document the ocean and its intensity of movement playing in the evening light as it faded into darkness. “Every photo I took looked like a future painting,” recalls Gordon.
With his research complete, Gordon then worked on four paintings over the course of the next week inspired by these two experiences. “Taking that feeling of encountering the surf for the first time and the memory of light and mood from the boat, I painted with the intention of capturing a sense of memory, a nostalgia,” says Gordon.
Look for these four original pieces by Ricky Lee Gordon adorning the walls of one of your favorite villas soon.

We are happy to bring you good news from Bali! Indonesian President Joko Widodo has declared that he expects to fully reopen Bali to foreign tourists by June or July of this year. The president made his statement while visiting Bali last week to check on the progress of the island’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
Indonesia’s Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno echoed the president’s optimism this week, saying that if Bali’s current vaccination rates stay on track, June/July of this year is a realistic time frame to reopen international borders for tourism.
“If people comply with the protocols while testing and vaccination program goes smoothly, I’m sure that our border will be fully reopened in the near future.”
– Sandiaga Uno, Tourism Minister of Indonesia
In the meantime, we continue to process E-Visas for our international guests who continue to arrive on international flights via Jakarta. Contact us for details on how we can arrange your E-Visa to visit us in Bali today. Because you deserve to join us at our Uluwatu cliff front in 2021!

The blue skies and clean swells have returned here in Uluwatu. The ocean is smooth, the swell lines are reliably rolling in, and the only sign of the rainy season is the lush forest canopy and green grass on our Uluwatu cliff front. Those friendly light offshore trade winds are back and the swell forecast for the rest of March and into April is looking excellent.
Be among the first to get in on what is looking to be another historically uncrowded surf season here in Uluwatu!
A full house of guests joined us for Nyepi this year. We celebrated the Balinese New Year with peace, serenity and spiritual renewal on the cliffs above Uluwatu.
Our Nyepi guests explored our lush gardens, private beach access and temple tour in our vintage Land Rover (before & after Nyepi), practiced yoga from their cliff front villas beside private pools, or just lay in the hammock with a good book while the trade winds tickled their feet.
Kelly Slater puts on a show in front of USV along with Strider Wasilewski, Rizal Tandjung and Betet Merta.
In addition to Hamilton and Slater, 2020 also saw several of the best in their field come to stay with us at the villas, including Championship Tour surfers Kolohe Andino and Griffin Colapinto, Dutch footballer Marc Klok and award-winning Indonesian actress Raline Shah.
What did they all have in common? They all wanted to go for a spin in our vintage Land Rover Adventure Wagons! But the award for best USV Land Rover Adventure goes to world-class tube hunter and Surfer Poll Award winner Koa Smith. Koa and his friends loaded up our USV Land Rover and hit the road to discover one of the longest (and glassiest) barrels of the 2020 season in Indonesia. See Koa’s full score below…

Greatness recognizes greatness. In 2020 it was our honor to host two of the the sporting world’s Greatest Of All Time – 7-time Formula 1 Champion Lewis Hamilton and 11-time World Surfing Champion Kelly Slater.
Mr. Hamilton, a newly-stoked surfer when he’s not tearing up the F1 track, made himself at home in our new Cliff Front 6 5-bedroom luxury villa for over two months – surfing, training and eating healthy from our special plant-based menu at Mana Uluwatu while preparing for the F1 season to resume.
After a rejuvenating long-term stay in Cliff Front 6 – and A LOT of epic sessions at empty Uluwatu – Mr. Hamilton returned to the track, going on to claim his record-92nd career win with his victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix in October, surpassing racing legend Michael Schumacher for the all-time F1 wins record. Hamilton continued his amazing run by clinching the 2020 F1 Championship with yet another victory at the Turkish Grand Prix, tying Schumacher for the most championships in the sport’s history, with seven total.
Congrats, Champ! We look forward to celebrating your incredible accomplishment with more waves and good times on our cliff front soon!
Slater, meanwhile, stayed with us for over three months beginning in August while the WSL Championship Tour was on hiatus, keeping his barrel form fresh by scoring countless spitting tubes out front and down the road at Padang Padang. During his stay with us, Slater was reunited with his original 1994 Pipe Masters Trophy, courtesy of our GM, Arrow Dunk. He also took advantage of our new speedboat surf charter service to make strike missions to G-Land, Lombok and West Sumbawa when the ideal swells lined up. In between all the perfect waves, Slater enjoyed jamming out in his villa.
After an epic stay on the cliff front, Slater headed off to Hawaii to compete in the WSL’s restart at the Pipeline Masters, where he nearly claimed a record eighth Pipe Masters. Our favorite 48-year-old WCT surfer fell to eventual 2020 champion John Florence in a Semifinals Super Heat watched around the world.
It was our great pleasure to provide some welcome R&R for two of the hardest working and inspirational athletes in the world while they trained and prepared to return to their respective arenas. Come back any time, gentlemen!

If you’ve visited USV in recent years, you’ve no doubt had the pleasure of experiencing Kish’s welcoming good vibes.
Among Kish’s recent creative endeavors was helping to design one of our newest luxury villas, Ocean View 6. Kish helped us conceive Ocean View 6 with an artist’s dream retreat in mind, making it the ideal place for a creative escape and the perfect space to get inspired.

The Surfer’s Journal article explores Kish’s journey as an artist, surfer and human, and how the magic of Uluwatu has influenced his work and lifestyle. Featuring beautiful photography of Kish at work in his USV studio on his trademark pointillism paintings and surfing his favorite wave out front, you’ll want to pick up a copy of the latest TSJ to learn more about Kish’s unique journey.

A lot has happened here at the end of the road since our last newsletter. Here's a little recap since our previous check in. As always a BIG THANK YOU to all our guests, friends and team members who made these days extra special.
Our good friend, and California based artist, Andy Davis came east for a visit, and to work on a series of original paintings for his art show entitled "Suka Cita" at Drifter Surf Shop & Gallery. Andy is one of our favorite artists, and we were stoked to host him here while he let his creative juices loose.
Andy developed the show back home in San Diego collaborating with friend and legendary surfer Rob Machado. In addition to the works on canvas, Rob supplied a small quiver of his surfboards that Andy adorned with his iconic touch. Some of the characters portrayed in the paintings may or may not resemble Rob himself 😉
Upon arrival Andy continued working on pieces he started in the states and began some new ones here. Of course, some Uluwatu surf sessions were shared between all the art making. On the sprawling deck of
Cliff Front 7, one of our new tropical modern villas, Andy further develops the body of work. Not coincidentally this villa houses a collection of his art.
Art being made in the stunning architecture of Ocean View 3.
Our incredible on-site woodworking team built handmade float frames from reclaimed teak. These are the same frames that adorn Andy's pieces throughout our property.
Opening night was a blast! Friends from near and far arrived to enjoy the festivities. We saw a big turn out of folks from all over the island and a steady flow of travelers that caught word of the event. The vibes were turned up to level 11. The Spacemonks spun tunes on the 1's & 2's to get the party going, while people frolicked about. RB's band, ASTAGA played a live set, whom Rob joined onstage for a few songs!
This surf season was arguably the best this decade. Back-to-back swells graced our reefs nonstop. It seemed there was never a moment when the ocean wasn’t alive in full pounding force. The wave quality and consistency was unreal this year.
Up top, these three Jay Nelson shade shacks are in full chill mode. Located at the Mana Uluwatu pool, where food & drink can be enjoyed with a sweeping view of the Indian Ocean, access is open to the public, so please come by for a visit!
Jay also designed a bedside lamp that we've made in-house for all the villas. They will also be available at our boutique at Mana Uluwatu soon.
In June 2020, we're honored to have friend Tom Carroll with us to host
"A Journey Through Meditation"- a meditation & surf retreat with special guests. Learn more and book your spot here.
We've seen some great photography of Cliff Front 7 since our soft opening a couple months ago.

May & June were two action packed months in our corner of the world. It's hard to believe how many epic days were had - in and out - of the water. A BIG THANK YOU to all our guests, friends and team members who made these days extra special.
A wonderful group of people traveled far and wide to gather here on the cliffs of Uluwatu to take part in our fourth "Yoga with Aloha" retreat with the legend and guru himself, Gerry Lopez.
Gerry shared his infectious wisdom & philosophy learned from a life long path enlightened by surfing and yoga. He led daily yoga classes on the cliff and our Morning Light yoga shala.
There was plenty of water time too. Guests joined Gerry on some excellent sessions out front, and some of our beginners headed down to Padang Padang throughout the week to give surfing a go.
Some of the Patagonia women's design team joined the retreat. They went on a little boat mission and scored! Below designer, surfer & activist Belinda Baggs finds her flow.
"Relaxation is your fountain of youth. Relaxation is your
evergreen"
-Gerry Lopez
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for this year's Yoga with Aloha retreat!
We've been busy expanding the property and are excited to announce the completion of two new tropical modern villas by architect Alexis Dornier.
A new wave of architecturally inspired contemporary enclaves flow with modern, angular lines, generous indoor-outdoor spaces, and their own pools, maintaining a consistent palette of 100-plus year-old reclaimed Dutch teak from Java, reclaimed ironwood from Kalimantan, andesite, terrazzo, local stone, and plenty of glass. A distinct feeling of warmth and respect for craftsmanship pervades these new dwellings.
Cliff Front 7 has a 1970's retro feel with a modern twist. This 4 bedroom masterpiece is open for bookings now. For more details inquire here.
The tropical modern interiors of the new villas consistently include king beds, reclaimed teak furniture custom built onsite, hand-shaped replica teak Alaia surfboards, and large terrazzo showers. Linen curtains throughout give privacy inside the sun-drenched villas, though when drawn back reveal mesmerizing views of ocean & jungle. Room service from our onsite restaurant, Mana Uluwatu, is available, and there is buggy service to and from the top of the resort.
Ocean View 3 with it's towering walls and sky high ceilings makes you feel like a kid in a castle. For more details on how to book this four bedroom wonder, inquire here.
We commissioned our friend, artist Andy Davis to make us these incredible oversized prints to hang throughout these two new villas. Our team of talented in-house woodworkers made the float frames using reclaimed teak.
In May, artist Jay Nelson and his family came out from San Francisco, CA and stayed with us on the property. Jay designed a series of shade shacks and other unique projects on-sight that we jumped right into building.
We are building these interactive sculptures from reclaimed Javanese teak.
Two of the 3 capsules have been built, and have found their homes near the Mana Uluwatu pool. One more is in the works and once complete, all 3 will be fully cushioned for maximum relaxing. These fun interactive sculptures are available for our guests lounging pleasure, and are the perfect place to chill out poolside with your cocktail or clubhouse lunch from our restaurant.
June saw epic surf in our front yard, and some of the worlds most legendary wave riders came through for a visit and enjoyed Uluwatu's famed waves.
Kelly Slater doing his thing right here at Ulu's.
June closed up with the biggest waves since the Big Wednesday swell in July '18, almost a year ago. This is the view from our cliff front lawn as a select few brave souls paddled into some of the heaviest waves Uluwatu has to offer.
The property has been buzzing with love as wedding season is upon us. For 2020 wedding date availabilities, send us a note here.
Thank you for being a part of the family & best wishes from all of us at USV. Sampai Jumpa!

The waves have been on fire this past month here in Uluwatu. Three back to back swells welcomed us to the season in mid April, lighting up the playing field out front. Then even more rolled into May. Professionals, soul surfers and average Joe's and Jane's all came for a piece of the action. A hand full of solid days had the small community of big wave aficionados dusting off their guns. A few took to the sea to test their courage for the chance of glory. Some succeeded. Some got smoked.
Hundreds, if not thousands of perfect tubes rolled over the reef in these fleeting days, most unridden. Some of them occupied beneath the curtain for thrilling brief moments of time before ending their journeys across the Indian Ocean.
More swell is on the forecast! Book your trip here and come and get a taste!
We're stoked to have multifaceted artist Jay Nelson staying with us. He is designing a series of interactive structures around the property for you, our guests, to relax and play in. A grouping of open-air lounge capsules will compliment our new pool area, while a path from the deck will lead to a vibey massage den tucked into the jungle. He's also designing unique lighting fixtures for each villa which will also be available in our small boutique. The passenger buggy will be the cherry on top!
"I’m interested in architectural forms because of the weight they carry in our lives. On the most basic level, they provide us with a safe place to rest and think, but they also determine the way we interact with each other and create a frame for the outside world. Arranging the pieces of a structure is infinite and those arrangements make us who we are."
We use reclaimed wood wherever possible in most of our projects. All of the capsules are being built from reclaimed teak.
Jay has been surfing his hand shaped asymmetrical boards he made in San Francisco.
We're excited to share more as Jay's projects progress in our next newsletter. You can see more of Jay's work on his website JayNelsonArt.com
May 4th we hosted our first poolside event!
"Land & Sea" was a collaborative dinner with Chef Fernando De Souza of Mana Uluwatu and Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa of Kaum. Celebrating the culture of Bali, the meal was a tribute to the late Chef Agung Nugroho - who was both an inspiration to, and instrumental in, the careers of both chefs.
With a sustainable approach, Chefs Wayan and Fernando combined Chinese, Fijian, Vietnamese and Latin American influences to craft a memorable 6-course meal using the best and freshest local Balinese ingredients from Land and Sea.
A short film about the chefs collaboration by Tiesbe can be seen here
We've made it as simple as a click of a button to make a reservation at our on-site restaurant Mana Uluwatu. Groups of 6 or more can reserve a table on our website, Instagram, Facebook and Trip Advisor pages. Come on down for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

On Thursday March 7th, from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning is Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence.
Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu holiday, non-Hindu residents and tourists are not exempt from the restrictions. Although they are free to do as they wish inside their hotel rooms, no one is allowed onto the beaches or streets, and the only airport in Bali remains closed for the entire day. There will be no wifi available or TV, and we ask there to be no lights turned on after dark. Air conditioning will be available. This is a holiday of self-reflection. What better way to ponder the universe than to go outside and sit under the stars. This is THE best day of the year to view the night sky here in Bali.
Thank you for being a part of the family & best wishes from all of us at USV!

Good Vibes Giveaway Winner
Through our Good Vibes Giveaway Fundraiser we raised over IDR 15,000,000 in donations for Project Nasi, the humanitarian aid organization in Bali distributing food and basic necessities to families struggling with food insecurity during the current pandemic and associated economic slowdown.
