  Wave Ki retreat with Brad Gerlach We will be hosting a surf retreat with former professional surfer and current Wave Ki founder Brad Gerlach to provide an opportunity for surfers of all levels to improve their skills and experience the thrill of accelerating their surfing at one of the best waves on earth. During this September retreat, guests will receive personalized coaching sessions, group classes, and video analysis from Brad Gerlach himself and other elite surfers and coaches. The Wave Ki program is designed to help guests develop a martial art-like focus on slow, precise movements that embed a powerful surfing pattern deep within them, allowing them to extract every ounce of energy out of the ocean and surf better. In addition to surfing, guests can participate in yoga and meditation to enhance their overall well-being. Adding another level of knowledge to the retreat, Jason Rice will be conducting sessions on breath-holding, water survival apnea techniques, and ice baths. As a seasoned waterman, Jason’s workshops will help participants push their limits in the water, increase their lung capacity, and learn essential water survival skills. Greyson Fletcher stayed with us over the winter season, skating the new bowl, scoring fun wet season waves and entertaining us with his stories. He and videographer friend Max Desantis teamed up during his stay to make an epic edit of Greyson skating the bowl. We think you’ll enjoy it! Greyson checked in with us recently to ask about the season here, and had this to say about leaving Bali recently and being back in California: "Water is the coldest we’ve ever had, I’m skating a lot so that’s good. But I miss Indo so much!" We are betting we see him again soon! April’s show featured Rubitta Huang, Jemana Murti, and the Black Hand Gang. Rubitta Huang creates intricate painted portraits alive with movement, a kaleidoscope of color on black, like a life sized micro multiverse. Jemana Murti’s work is exciting new media combined with traditional wisdom, textured abstract paintings imbued with Balinese philosophies. Black Hand Gang is an artist’s collective and print making studio, working with some of the best artists in Indonesia. We have two seasons here: dry season and wet season. The peak of the dry is around late July and the peak of the wet and rainy season is around January. The trade winds, called simply "the trades," were named by sailing traders and merchants who count on them to carry them west in the dry season and east again in the wet, but nowadays us surfers can count on them to groom perfect swells. Uluwatu and the rest of the west coast blows offshore during the dry season, and during the wet season the east coast of Bali is offshore. For Uluwatu, our months-on-end run of daily off-shores and steady ground swell begins right about now!  Large and clean swell shot by Nate Lawrence in August of last year.  |
